NDC Slams NPP Over Wontumi Protest, Accuses Them of Political Gamesmanship

Accra, Ghana - 01 June, 2025 - Hamza Suhuyini, a key member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, has made accusations against the New Patriotic Party (NPP), alleging that the party is exploiting the ongoing legal woes of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, for political gain.
In a recent interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Suhuyini claimed that the NPP's protest outside the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters was a calculated move to further individual ambitions ahead of internal party elections, rather than a genuine show of solidarity with Wontumi.
Suhuyini's comments come on the heels of a dramatic sit-in staged by NPP Members of Parliament outside EOCO on May 29, where they demanded Wontumi's release. The protest, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, was marked by chants and accusations of political persecution.
However, Suhuyini dismissed the protest as a publicity stunt, stating that many NPP MPs are merely positioning themselves for re-election and using Wontumi's situation as a convenient excuse.
“They are just fishing for excuses to be able to ply their political ambitions around the whole issue of Wontumi,” Suhuyini stated. “It is not because they have issues with the legalities that this government has adopted. Many of the members are just gunning for positions. They all went there to be retained because they are going for re-election.”
Wontumi's legal troubles began with his arrest on May 27 by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service over alleged financial irregularities.
Wontumi was then handed over to EOCO for investigation into potential financial crimes, such as fraud and money laundering. Despite being granted bail on May 28, he continues to be held in custody, prompting questions about the case's management.
