Mahama Announces 200,000 Hectare Expansion to Revamp Cocoa Industry

Bono East, Ghana - 01 June, 2025 - In a bid to revitalize Ghana's struggling cocoa industry, President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a bold plan to expand cocoa production by adding 200,000 hectares of new cocoa farms, with the aim of increasing farmers' income and rejuvenating the sector.
During his national Thank You tour, which took him to the Ahafo Region, the president declared on Saturday, May 31, that his government is dedicated to restoring the formerly prosperous cocoa industry.
Mahama emphasized his government's commitment to providing incentives to farmers, boosting production, and ultimately improving their livelihoods.
“Plans are underway to revamp the collapsed cocoa sector. Incentives will be provided to our hardworking farmers to increase cocoa production. We aim to add 200,000 hectares of cocoa to Ghana’s output to increase the income of our farmers,”he stated.
He also revealed that the Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Randy Abbey, has promised to announce a new, favorable cocoa producer price in August.
Encouraging potential farmers to seize the opportunity, Mahama urged them to start planting cocoa, signaling a renewed focus on the sector.
“So those of you who do not have cocoa farms, go and start looking for land and start planting cocoa,” he encouraged.
