NDC Contests NPP's Mandamus Application in Election Results Dispute

Accra, Ghana - December 31, 2024 - A fresh challenge has emerged in Ghana's ongoing election dispute, as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) contests the High Court's jurisdiction to hear a mandamus application filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NDC's legal team, led by Godwin Tameklo, argues that the NPP's application is an attempt to circumvent the proper channels for challenging election results. According to Tameklo, the Representation of People Law stipulates that election results can only be contested through a petition, not a prerogative writ like a mandamus.

The dispute centers on the collation of results in several constituencies, including Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central. The NPP had initially secured a High Court ruling compelling the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-collate results in constituencies originally declared in favor of the NDC. However, the Supreme Court later overturned this ruling.

The EC subsequently declared NPP candidates as winners in seven of these constituencies, prompting the NDC to challenge the decision. The High Court is expected to deliver its final verdict on the matter on January 1, 2025.
