Nation in Grief: 3-Day National Mourning Period Begins Today

Accra ,Ghana - August 6 2025 - In a somber response to the devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals on Wednesday, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended all his scheduled activities and programmes for the remainder of the week.

The government has declared a three-day national mourning period, starting Thursday, August 7, 2025, as a mark of respect for the victims.

According to a press statement issued by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), all national flags will fly at half-mast across the country until further notice. 

The President expressed profound sorrow over the incident and extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families. The nation is urged to observe the period of mourning with solemnity and reflection.

In a show of solidarity and support, Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang led a delegation comprising senior government officials, national executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the Military High Command to formally inform the families of the eight individuals who perished in the helicopter crash. 

The Vice President visited the homes of Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed.

Additionally, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and the NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, led a team to Koforidua to offer condolences to the mother and family of Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah. Two other teams were dispatched to visit the families of the helicopter crew in Takoradi, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and Deputy Director-General of NADMO, Samuel Aboagye.
