Accra, Ghana - 24 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's Minister-Designate for Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has called for the mandatory use of body cameras by police officers to tackle concerns over misconduct.

During his parliamentary vetting, Muntaka emphasized the need for greater accountability and transparency within the Ghana Police Service.

The proposal comes amid growing public outcry over incidents of police brutality and extortion, which have eroded trust in Ghana's law enforcement agencies. Muntaka's plan would require police officers to wear and activate body cameras during official duties, providing an unbiased record of interactions with the public.

“We will ensure that if you are a police officer and you have to step out, then you have your body camera on to take away all the ambuigity and the troubles because when you put the body camera on, everywhere you are, you are being recorded.

“So that when you are on the road extorting money and brutalise others, it will show and record whatever the police officer is doing,'' he added.
