Accra,Ghana - The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has issued a stern warning to all unlicensed mortuaries and funeral homes in Ghana, giving them a one-week ultimatum to regularize their operations or face severe sanctions, including possible closure.

In a statement dated October 22, 2025, MoFFA expressed deep concern over the continued operations of several mortuaries and funeral facilities without the requisite licenses, in direct violation of Section 55 of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829). The law stipulates that any person who operates a facility without proper registration or licensing commits an offence and is liable to a fine or the temporary or permanent closure of the facility.

MoFFA's mandate is clear: to license, control, and regulate all establishments involved in the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains. The agency has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public health safety and dignity in death, under its guiding motto: "Protecting the Living; Dignifying the Dead".

Affected operators are urged to visit MoFFA's offices at the former Ministry of Health Main Building, Room 22, or contact its officials through its official phone lines or website (link unavailable) for guidance on the regularization process. The agency has assured that enforcement actions will begin immediately after the one-week grace period expires.

This move is part of MoFFA's broader efforts to ensure standards in the mortuary and funeral services sector.
