Military Deployment in Bawku as Chieftaincy Violence Escalates
Accra, Ghana – 27 July, 2025 – The Mahama administration has deployed the Ghana Armed Forces to Bawku and surrounding areas to enforce curfews and maintain law and order, following a surge in violence linked to the long-standing chieftaincy conflict. This move marks a shift from peacekeeping to "peace enforcement" to protect lives and property.
The Bawku chieftaincy dispute, primarily between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups, has resulted in recurring violence and loss of life in the Upper East Region. Despite previous mediation efforts, the conflict has intensified in recent months, with civilians, including students, being targeted.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, July 27, 2025, the government assured the public that the Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property. The statement acknowledged the efforts of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in mediating the conflict and commended the vital roles played by the Nayiri and Zugraana in supporting a near-resolution.
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has reviewed the curfew hours imposed on Bawku Municipality and its adjoining communities. The new curfew hours will run from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily, until further notice. Residents are urged to remain calm, refrain from violence, and fully cooperate with the Armed Forces.
The Bawku Senior High School has been temporarily closed following the fatal shooting of a third-year student, Hakim Kundima, on the school's campus. The government has also initiated an emergency evacuation of students from conflict-hit areas, including Bawku and Nalerigu.
The government has emphasized its commitment to restoring peace and long-term stability in the region. While acknowledging potential inconvenience to law-abiding citizens, the government assures that the peace enforcement operation is aimed solely at ensuring the safety and security of all residents, including students.
