Mahama's Asia Gamble: President Courts Japanese and Singaporean Investors

Accra - Sunday, August 17, 2025 - In a significant move to strengthen Ghana's global presence and foster economic growth, President John Dramani Mahama has embarked on a crucial diplomatic journey to Japan and Singapore, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties, boost trade and investment, and advance shared development goals.

The visit, as outlined in a statement released by the Presidency Communications, is aimed at deepening bilateral relations, expanding trade and investment links, and advancing cooperation on shared development priorities.

During his visit to Japan, President Mahama will participate in the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IX), where he will deliver a presentation at a plenary session on "The Economy: Promoting Trade and Investment." This conference provides a platform for African leaders to engage with international partners on key issues affecting the continent's development. The President's participation is expected to highlight Ghana's investment opportunities and showcase the country's potential for economic growth.

In addition to his participation in TICAD IX, President Mahama will deliver an address at the Ghana Presidential Investment Forum, which will focus on showcasing Ghana's investment opportunities and the "Resetting Ghana" agenda.

This forum is designed to attract potential investors and promote Ghana as a viable destination for foreign investment. The President will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with key Japanese partners, including the President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), senior representatives of the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

These meetings will center on discussions related to trade, investment, technical cooperation, and infrastructure partnerships, further solidifying the economic ties between Ghana and Japan.

Following his engagements in Japan, President Mahama will undertake a three-day state visit to Singapore. The visit will include a courtesy call on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, a meeting with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, and participation in the Africa-Singapore Business Forum.

The President will also address an investment forum, where he will present Ghana's reform and investment priorities and strengthen private-sector linkages between Ghana and Singapore-based investors. This visit is expected to enhance economic cooperation between the two nations and attract investment into Ghana.

The primary objectives of President Mahama's visits to Japan and Singapore are to attract investment, broaden market access for Ghanaian goods and services, mobilize technical and development cooperation, and bolster partnerships in key sectors such as technology, infrastructure, finance, and human capital development.

The success of this mission could potentially open new avenues for economic growth, enhance Ghana's global standing, and contribute to the country's long-term prosperity.
