Mahama Vows to Complete Sewua Hospital

Kumasi, Ghana - 20 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to complete the long-abandoned Sewua Hospital in the Ashanti region, aiming to ease the pressure on the overwhelmed Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace on Sunday during the first Akwasidae celebration of the year, President Mahama acknowledged the critical role the 250-bed Sewua Hospital will play in reducing the patient load at KATH, which serves not only the Ashanti Region but also surrounding areas. The teaching hospital is currently stretched beyond its capacity and urgently needs renovations.

However, the Sewua Hospital's completion has been hindered by basic infrastructure issues, including a lack of electricity, water, and a connecting road. President Mahama assured that his government will tackle these challenges immediately, enabling the transfer of patients from KATH and allowing for much-needed renovations at the teaching hospital.

“The Sewua Hospital is not operational because there is no electricity, there is no water, and the road to the hospital has not been constructed. I wish to assure you that we will tackle it immediately and make sure that we can open the doors of that hospital so that it will ease the pressure on Komfo Anokye,'' he stated.

“We need to move some of the patients from Komfo Anokye to Sewua so that we can empty the infrastructure in Komfo Anokye and do the necessary renovations. It is difficult to do the renovations of Komfo Anokye when the hospital is working at full capacity,'' he added.

The Sewua Hospital has been embroiled in controversy, with its premature commissioning by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo sparking criticism from the project's contractor, Euroget De-Invest S.A., who argued that key components of the project remained incomplete.
