Mahama Visits Mali in Bid to Strengthen Regional Ties

Bamako, Mali - 09 March, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has begun a diplomatic tour of the Sahel region, visiting Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso in a bid to strengthen ties with neighboring countries.

The visit is part of President Mahama's "good neighborliness" policy, aimed at fostering cooperation and understanding in the sub-region.

President Mahama's first stop was Bamako, Mali, where he was received by Transitional President General Goita at the Modiba Keita Airport.

The two leaders held a closed-door meeting at the presidential palace, discussing issues of mutual concern.

The visit comes at a time when Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have left the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and formed their own alliance, the Alliance of Sahel States.

President Mahama's tour is seen as an effort to reconcile the three countries with ECOWAS and promote regional stability.

The Ghanaian president is expected to visit Niger and Burkina Faso in the coming days, where he will engage in similar diplomatic efforts.

The outcome of his visit will be closely watched, as it has significant implications for regional cooperation and stability.
