Mahama Swears in COP Yohuno as new IGP, Tasks him to Root out Corruption from Police Service

Jubilee House, Accra, Ghana - 14 March, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), marking a significant shift in the country's law enforcement leadership.

The ceremony took place at the Jubilee House in Accra on Friday, March 14, following the removal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from office.

While the reasons behind Dr. Dampare's dismissal remain unclear, sources indicate that it is part of a broader effort to restructure and revamp the Ghana Police Service.

President Mahama has emphasized the need to eliminate corruption within the police service, calling for greater transparency and accountability in law enforcement.

Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, President Mahama emphasized the urgent need to eliminate corruption within the police service, stressing the importance of transparency and accountability in law enforcement.

He tasked COP Yohuno with rooting out corruption and unethical practices, which he believes undermine public trust and confidence in the justice system.

“Mr. IGP, your role will also involve rooting out corruption within the service,” he stated.

“Corruption in law enforcement undermines justice and weakens public confidence in our security agencies.''

“It is crucial that all forms of unethical behavior, from bribery to the abuse of power, are decisively dealt with,” Mahama added.

COP Yohuno, a veteran law enforcement officer with over 40 years of experience, is expected to lead the Ghana Police Service with professionalism and integrity.

His appointment signals a new phase for the police service under the Mahama administration, which is focused on improving the effectiveness and integrity of the country's security apparatus.
