Mahama Orders Restoration of 64 FM Stations Shut Down by NCA

Accra, Ghana - 12 June, 2025 - In a surprise move, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, to ensure the immediate restoration of broadcast services to 64 FM radio stations shut down by the National Communications Authority (NCA) for regulatory breaches.

The directive was issued just hours after the NCA closed the stations, citing non-compliance with authorization requirements.

According to a statement by the President's Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, President Mahama believes in striking a balance between regulatory compliance and media freedom. The President's directive emphasizes the importance of media outlets in democratic societies and the need to support them in fulfilling their roles.

The NCA's shutdown of the FM stations had sparked concerns about the impact on media freedom and the potential loss of diverse voices in the country's media landscape. The affected stations include popular radio outlets such as Happy FM, Asaase Radio, and Wontumi FM.

President Mahama's directive also calls for the Minister to work with the NCA to set a reasonable timeframe for the affected stations to regularize their authorization
