Mahama Establishes Task Force to Tackle Recurring Floods in Ghana

Accra, Ghana - 12 March, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has taken decisive action to address the country's persistent flooding issues, establishing a special task force to tackle the problem.

The Anti-Flood Taskforce, chaired by Deputy Chief of Staff Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, brings together key stakeholders from various ministries and agencies to develop effective strategies for flood prevention and mitigation.

The Taskforce is led by a team of key members, with Marietta Brew, the Legal Counsel to the President, serving as its Secretary. Other prominent members include:

- Minister for Water Resources, Works & Housing: Kenneth Gilbert Adjei
- Minister for Local Government: Ahmed Ibrahim
- National Security Coordinator: DCOP Abdul Osman Razak
- Deputy Director General of NADMO: Teddy Addi

These individuals will work together to tackle the country's flooding issues

The task force has already begun its field activities, conducting an aerial reconnaissance of flood-prone areas, including Weija, the Sakumo Ramsar Site, and the Tema Fishing Harbour area.

This initiative aims to gather crucial data for flood prevention and identify critical drainage channels that require urgent attention.

According to Stan Dogbe, chairman of the anti-flooding taskforce, stricter measures will be implemented to curb flooding, including the desilting of major drains.

“The President, concerned about the persistent flooding not only in Accra but across the country, has set up a special task force to tackle the issue and minimize if not entirely prevent, floods, particularly within the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

“Today, the task force embarked on an aerial tour to inspect critical drainage channels that require urgent attention,” he stated in an interview with the media on March 12, 2025.

This effort will be undertaken in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces.

Brigadier General Richard Kinney, Commander of the Engineer Brigade of the Ghana Armed Forces, emphasized that public indiscipline, particularly among residents in flood-prone areas, has contributed significantly to the long-standing flooding problem.

To mitigate future disasters, key measures such as preventing construction in waterways will be enforced.

The establishment of the Anti-Flood Taskforce demonstrates President Mahama's commitment to addressing the country's flooding issues and ensuring the safety and well-being of Ghanaian citizens.
