Bawku, Upper East Region, Ghana - 19 March, 2025 - A devastating night of violence in Bawku, Ghana, has sparked outrage and calls for accountability, after allegations of military brutality against civilians surfaced.

The incident occurred on the night of Tuesday, March 18, 2025, following the killing of a military officer by an unknown gunman.

Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader, has vehemently condemned the alleged brutality, describing the military's actions as "unacceptable" and expressing deep concern over reports of violence against women, children, and elderly residents.

Ayariga offered heartfelt condolences to the family of the slain military officer and urged all parties involved to exercise restraint. He expressed disappointment that his initial pleas for caution were disregarded, but reaffirmed his dedication to promoting peace and ensuring justice for the victims.

“I regret the accidental killing of a military personnel and I condemn that dastardly act,” he stated. “However, ransacking homes, beating innocent civilians, and holding the entire town to ransom cannot be justified. The rule of law must prevail, and those responsible for maintaining order should never engage in such acts of violence.”

“I regret that the military command did not heed my appeal not to react violently, and they went ahead to do what they did. We need to work together to restore peace.”

Ayariga stated that he remain hopeful that the peace mediation efforts, led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, will ultimately bring an end to the violence plaguing Bawku.

“I have confidence that all sides will repose trust in His Majesty the Asantehene to bring finality to the situation in Bawku and end the violence we are experiencing,” he added.

This sentiment echoes the calls for peace and justice from other leaders, including former President John Mahama, who has urged the military to work with the police to ensure safety and security in the region ².
