Maame Efua Houadjeto Takes Helm as Ghana Tourism Authority CEO
Accra, Ghana - 30 Jan, 2025 - Maame Efua Houadjeto, a seasoned politician and former Deputy Women's Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
Ms. Houadjeto's appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the tourism industry, which has been identified as a key driver of economic growth. With her wealth of experience in empowering women and communities, she is expected to lead the GTA in promoting Ghana's rich cultural heritage and developing policies to attract local and international tourists.
The GTA's previous CEO, Akwasi Agyeman, stepped down on January 22, after a successful six-year tenure. During his leadership, international tourist arrivals surged from 355,108 in 2020 to 1,148,002 in 2023, exceeding pre-pandemic figures. Domestic tourism also experienced significant growth, with visitor numbers increasing from 456,000 in 2017 to 1.4 million in 2023.
Mr. Agyeman's achievements also included the rehabilitation of numerous tourist sites, the redevelopment of historic and cultural landmarks, and the launch of notable initiatives such as "The Year of Return" and "December in Ghana".
