Asamoah Boateng Throws Hat into Ring for NPP Top Job
Accra, Ghana - In a move that is set to further intensify the power struggle within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), former Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman.
Popularly known as Asabee, the seasoned politician announced his decision on Saturday, October 25, stating that his goal is to help build a more disciplined, united, and well-structured party that will serve the interests of Ghanaians.
“My fellow patriots, the time has come for me to officially declare my intentions to contest the National Chairman position for the NPP,” he stated. “I have always been committed to the good course of the party, and I will ensure that we work together as a family to have a structured NPP for the good people of Ghana,”Asabee emphasized in an official statement.
His declaration sets the stage for a potentially keenly contested race for the NPP's top national executive position.
As a long-serving member of the NPP, Asamoah Boateng has previously held several government and party positions, including Minister for Information, Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Environment, as well as Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
According to Asabee ,His leadership ambitions are built around ushering in "a new era of disciplined and structured NPP," with a strong focus on grassroots engagement and party unity .
This is not Asamoah Boateng's first attempt at the chairmanship position. In 2022, he contested for the same position but lost to Stephen Ayesu Ntim, who emerged victorious on his fifth attempt with 4,014 votes, while Asabee secured 1,010 votes.
Undeterred by his previous defeat, Asamoah Boateng is confident that his vision for a more disciplined and structured party will resonate with the NPP's grassroots base.
