Korle-Bu Renal Unit Services Resume After Week-Long Suspension

Accra, Ghana - 07 May, 2025 - The Renal Patients Association has announced that outpatient services at the Korle-Bu Renal Unit in Accra have resumed after a week-long suspension that left many patients without treatment.
According to Kojo Baffour Ahenkora, President of the association, patients were not formally notified about the suspension or the resumption of services, leading to confusion and anxiety.
Ahenkora expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the hospital in an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily show on Wednesday, May 7, stating that patients had to rely on informal sources to determine whether services were available. However, based on reports from patients, he confirmed that the centre is now fully operational, with patients receiving treatment on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The association's president emphasized the need for transparent communication from the hospital, saying that official updates would help alleviate uncertainty and anxiety among patients.
“[On] Tuesday, people were called to report for their session, which presumably means that maybe they have received some of the consumables which were allegedly short. Yesterday, some of them were called to report back to their unit for their treatment. This morning, too, the Wednesday batch has also been called to come for their treatment.
“We believe that it is now open to the OPD, but we believe that proper communication should have been done; ‘we had a problem, but now we have resumed,’ so that we will know that we are good to go. But as I said, it is a hearsay rumour.
“I can confirm that the unit is working fully now. I have not been there this morning, but my checks with some of the patients who are there this morning tell me that they are on the machine receiving treatment,” he added.
