King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II Calls for Ga Language Revival in Schools

Accra, Ghana - 9 July, 2025 - The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has called for the urgent revival of the Ga language and culture through Ghana’s education system, warning that the erosion of cultural identity threatens future generations.

Speaking at the 85th anniversary celebration of Odorgonno Senior High School in Accra on 5 July 2025, the traditional leader announced plans to collaborate with Ghana’s Ministry of Education to integrate the Ga language into the national curriculum, emphasizing its role in preserving the heritage of the Ga people.

“We want to partner with the Ministry of Education to integrate the Ga language in our GES curriculum”, he affirmed, calling for a collective effort to ensure that students learn about their roots,'' he stated.

Addressing students, teachers, alumni, and community members at the event, the Ga Mantse described culture as “the base of ethnicity” and a heritage that must not be lost.

“The future of our children is important to my chiefs and I. Our Chairman has said a lot and we will rebuild Odorgonno Senior High School.''

“Together with the Alumni of Odorgonno, we will refurbish the Tackie Tawiah Hostel in the School,” he declared.

“Our culture is who we are; it is the base of ethnicity; it is our heritage brought to the fore, making demand of us not to lose it.”

The Ga, one of Ghana’s major ethnic groups, primarily inhabit the Greater Accra Region, and their language is one of 11 officially recognized by the Ghana Education Service (GES). However, its use in schools has declined, with English dominating formal education, a concern echoed by cultural advocates in a 2023 Daily Graphic report highlighting the risk of indigenous languages fading.
