University of Ghana delays start of 2024/25 academic year over labour dispute
Accra, Ghana - The University of Ghana has announced a postponement of the 2024/2025 academic year due to an ongoing strike by several tertiary employee unions, including the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).
The strike, which began over unresolved disputes between the government and the unions, has affected the entire academic community.
The unions are demanding improved working conditions, citing issues such as delayed pension contributions, non-payment of vehicle maintenance allowances, and the suspension of certain agreed-upon allowances.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Registrar on September 25, 2024, the university confirmed the delay and assured stakeholders that special programs will proceed as planned.
However, a new start date for the general academic year will only be communicated once the situation stabilizes.
This development comes amid a wave of strikes by unions in Ghana, sparking concerns about the impact on the education sector and the broader economy.
