Judges Should Declare Their Assets - Justice Dzamefe

Accra, Ghana - 17 June, 2025 - Justice Senyo Dzamefe, nominated for a seat on Ghana's Supreme Court, has thrown his weight behind the declaration of assets by judges, saying they should be treated like any other government appointees.

During his vetting before Parliament's Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, Justice Dzamefe emphasized that judges are not exempt from this legal provision.

When questioned by Deputy Minority Chief Whip Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Justice Dzamefe argued that if the law requires all government appointees to declare their assets, judges should not be an exception.

He confirmed that he has already filed for his asset declaration, demonstrating his commitment to transparency.

“Mr. Chairman, as the honourable has said, if that is the law that all government appointees should declare their assets, and judges are government appointees, they should declare their assets. Why not?"

In a separate but related development, Justice Dzamefe expressed his opposition to restricting investigative journalism, even if it means the judiciary might face negative publicity. He believes that truthful and fair reporting should not be suppressed, highlighting the importance of press freedom in holding institutions accountable.

“Generally, I wouldn’t recommend repression,” he said. “Any investigative journalist who wants to do a thorough job. Once it’s true, why would I recommend suppression? Once it’s fair, fine.''
