Israel Intensifies Gaza City Attacks Amid UN Warning of 'Horrific' Consequences
The Israeli military has escalated its attacks on Gaza City, forcing hundreds of thousands of families to flee their homes and seek shelter elsewhere. The United Nations has warned that these intensified attacks could have "horrific" consequences for the displaced families, citing concerns over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the ongoing Israeli offensive on Gaza City has already led to significant displacement, with 1.9 million civilians – approximately 85% of the total population – forcibly displaced.
The situation is further complicated by the Israeli government's classification of Gaza City as a "dangerous combat zone," which has resulted in the discontinuation of daily tactical pauses. This move has severely impacted aid workers' ability to support those in need.
The UN and its partners say they remain committed to providing life-saving support to the people of Gaza, but they stress that their work must be fully facilitated. However, aid workers continue to face impediments to their movement inside the Gaza Strip, with one in every four movements facing obstacles despite being fully coordinated with Israeli authorities.
These impediments according to the UN have undermined planned activities, including cargo collection and road repairs.
In addition to the attacks on Gaza City, settler violence and home demolitions in the West Bank have also contributed to the displacement of Palestinian families. OCHA has recorded at least 64 Palestinian herding families displaced since October 2023 due to persistent violence and intimidation by settlers.
Furthermore, home demolitions in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have driven families away, with 873 Palestinians displaced since the start of the year after their homes were demolished or forced to be demolished.
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating situation in Gaza. The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator has highlighted the dire humanitarian situation, and delegates at the Security Council have categorically rejected any statements proposing that Palestinians should be resettled outside of Gaza.
