Lisbon Funicular Disaster: 15 Dead, 18 Injured in Devastating Derailment

A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, in Lisbon, Portugal, when the historic Elevador da Gloria funicular derailed and crashed, resulting in at least 15 fatalities and 18 injuries. The incident took place around 6 pm local time, during rush hour, near Restauradores Square in the city center.

The funicular, which connects the Baixa district with the Bairro Alto neighborhood, was traveling along its usual route when it suddenly derailed and slammed into a building. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with debris scattered everywhere and passengers trapped in the wreckage. Emergency services were quickly deployed to the scene, with firefighters and paramedics working tirelessly to rescue those trapped.

According to initial reports, a loose cable is believed to have caused the funicular to lose control and derail. The Lisbon transport company Carris, which operates the funicular, suspected brake failure might be the cause, but an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy.

The victims' nationalities have not been officially disclosed, but it's suspected that tourists from abroad were among those affected. Five of the injured are in serious condition, including a child. The National Institute for Emergency Medical Services (INEM) confirmed that emergency crews worked throughout the night to clear debris and provide medical assistance to those affected.

Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas described the incident as "a tragic day for our city" and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also expressed his deep regret over the accident and called for a swift investigation. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen offered her sympathies to the families of the victims.

The criminal investigation department has launched an investigation into the incident, with several officers on the scene collecting evidence. The investigation aims to determine the root cause of the accident and identify those responsible.

The Elevador da Gloria is a historic funicular that has been in operation since 1885. It's one of Lisbon's three historic city cable cars and serves both locals and tourists. The funicular covers a distance of approximately 200 meters, offering stunning views of the city. This tragic incident marks one of the deadliest transportation accidents in Lisbon's recent history.
