Illegal Miners have invaded my Concession - Asantehene

Kumasi, Ghana - 15 Feb, 2025 - Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has sounded the alarm over the devastating impact of illegal mining in Ghana, citing the invasion of his own mining concession at Akropong as a stark example.

Despite government efforts to curb the menace, the Asantehene lamented that illegal mining persists, wreaking havoc on the environment and economy.

In a meeting with the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources on Friday, February 14, the Asantehene urged for a more robust approach to tackle the issue. He proposed a multi-pronged strategy, including deploying security personnel to protect concessions, regularizing small-scale mining operations, and providing alternative livelihoods for those engaged in illegal mining.

“The site that was given to me has been invaded by illegal miners. Meanwhile, I had plans to give it out for proper mining. We must find a way to solve this crisis.”

“These children who are engaged in galamsey need jobs. We need to assist them so they don’t go back to the sites,'' he added.

The Asantehene's concerns are not new; he has been a vocal advocate for responsible mining practices. In August 2024, he took decisive action against three chiefs involved in illegal mining, destooling them for their role in environmental degradation.
