Ibrahim Mahama Sues IMANI's Bright Simons for Defamation Over Alleged Defamatory Article

Accra, Ghana - 29 May, 2025 - Businessman Ibrahim Mahama and his company, Engineers and Planners (E&P), have filed a defamation lawsuit against Bright Simons, Vice President of IMANI Africa, over an article published on April 19, 2024, titled “Ghana Provides a Lesson in How Not to Nationalise a Gold Mine”.

The article allegedly made defamatory claims about E&P's financial stability and suggested that Mahama was benefiting improperly from his political connections. The plaintiffs reject these claims as "entirely false and wholly without factual basis" and are seeking damages and a public retraction. The case was filed at an Accra High Court on May 28, 2024.

According to the court documents, the article was shared on Simons' X handle, where it gained significant traction, with over 93,000 views, 250 reactions, 98 reposts, 26 comments, and 109 bookmarks by May 8, 2024. The plaintiffs argue that this widespread dissemination of the alleged defamatory content has damaged both Mahama's personal reputation and E&P's credibility with business partners.

The lawsuit seeks several reliefs, including a declaration that the statements made by Simons are defamatory, a public retraction and apology, a perpetual injunction barring Simons from making further defamatory remarks, general damages amounting to GHS10 million, and legal costs. The plaintiffs claim that the article has portrayed E&P as financially unstable, undermining its credibility and potentially harming its business relationships.
