Ibrahim Mahama, E&P Gives Bright Simons 7-Day Ultimatum Over Gold Mine Allegations

Accra, Ghana - 30 April, 2025 - Businessman Ibrahim Mahama and his company, Engineers & Planners (E&P), are demanding a retraction and apology from policy analyst Bright Simons over an article alleging conflicts of interest and political influence in Ghana's mining sector.
The article, titled “Ghana Provides a Lesson in How Not to Nationalise a Gold Mine,” claims E&P, allegedly linked to Mahama's brother, Ghana's President, has been affected by Gold Fields' halt of mining at the Damang gold mine, raising concerns about potential political interference.
Lawyers for Mahama and E&P, the Robert Smith Law Group, describe the claims as "wholly false, malicious, and defamatory," stating that the article could harm E&P's reputation and business operations. They argue that E&P operates independently, guided by commercial principles, and deny any involvement in shaping mining policies or orchestrating government decisions.
“Such unfounded publications, especially from a public commentator of your stature, have the tendency to injure the hard-earned reputation of E&P, negatively affect its business operations, and diminish its standing with existing and prospective business partners and financiers,” portions of the letter stated.
Meanwhile, the solicitors have given Simons a seven-day ultimatum to retract the article and issue an unqualified apology, warning that legal action will follow if he fails to comply. Simons has yet to respond publicly to the demands.
