Hilla Limann Technical University Lecturers Embark on Indefinite Strike Over Unaddressed Concerns

Wa, Upper West Region, Ghana - 08 April, 2025 - Lecturers at Ghana's Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University have embarked on an indefinite strike, bringing academic activities to a halt, in protest over the university management's failure to address key concerns, including unpaid allowances and poor infrastructure.
The strike, which began on April 8, 2025, is the culmination of two years of failed negotiations between the university management and the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG). Lecturers are owed 32 months of Online Teaching Support Allowance (OTSA) arrears, despite partial payments, and the university lacks basic Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs), including projectors in lecture halls and functional computer labs.
Retired staff are also yet to receive their Internally Generated Fund (IGF) portion of the End of Service Benefit (ESB).
TUTAG Chairman, Samadu Kamwine, in an interview with Channel One TV, expressed frustration with the management's inaction, stating, "We’ve done everything possible, including engaging GTEC, but management’s continued silence and inaction have left us with no option but to lay down our tools.''
The strike has affected students and staff, with TUTAG emphasizing its willingness to engage in dialogue and adjust the academic calendar to recover lost contact hours if concerns are addressed. The university management has yet to comment on the strike, but TUTAG has expressed hope that negotiations will resume soon to resolve the impasse.
