High Court upholds injunction, blocks Ernest Kumi’s swearing-in as Akwatia MP

Koforidua, Ghana - 06 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's Akwatia Constituency is embroiled in a heated electoral dispute, with the Koforidua High Court upholding an injunction against New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate Ernest Kumi.

This ruling prevents Kumi from being sworn in as the Member of Parliament-elect for the constituency, pending further legal deliberations.

The electoral commission had declared Kumi the winner with 19,269 votes, surpassing his National Democratic Congress (NDC) rival Henry Boakye-Yiadom's 17,206 votes. However, Boakye-Yiadom contested the results, citing irregularities in the collation process.

The NDC's legal team, led by Mintah Larbi, expressed confidence in the court's decision, describing the initial election outcome as an "injustice".

“We are positive about the outcome based on our submissions today,” he stated.

In contrast, NPP counsel Gary Nimako Marfo argued that the injunction was improperly filed and urged the court to dismiss it.
