High Court Orders EC to Recollate Ablekuma North, Nsawam-Adoagyiri Constituencies Amid Controversy
A High Court in Ghana has intervened in a contentious electoral dispute, ordering the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-examine and announce the results of two parliamentary constituencies. The decision has effectively nullified the initial declarations made by the EC.
The court's ruling was prompted by a judicial review initiated by six parliamentary candidates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The candidates had sought to compel the EC to re-collate and announce the election results, citing irregularities in the initial process.
This decision, delivered by Presiding Judge Joseph Adu Owusu Agyeman on Friday, December 20, comes despite objections raised by lawyers from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by Godwin Edudzi Tamaklo.
The EC had previously faced criticism for its handling of the electoral process, with allegations of procedural breaches and intimidation of its staff. The commission had responded by nullifying the results of several constituencies, including Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, and Ablekuma North.
In a press briefing, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa revealed that the results of Okaikwei Central and Ablekuma North had been declared without proper collation, with significant omissions. The court's ruling has brought attention to the need for transparency and accountability in Ghana's electoral process.
