Acting Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to be Replaced by Justice Pwamang for 10 Days
Accra, Ghana – 17 August, 2025 – Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang will temporarily assume the role of Acting Chief Justice of Ghana for a period of at least ten days, starting from Monday, August 18, 2025. This decision comes as Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie announced his absence from the jurisdiction from August 18 to August 28, 2025.
Justice Pwamang is a senior Supreme Court judge and currently chairs a five-member committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate petitions seeking the removal of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office. This committee was formed in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State.
In a circular dated August 13, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie informed all justices of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, and heads of judicial divisions and units of his temporary absence. He extended his compliments while affirming Justice Pwamang's temporary leadership of the judiciary during the period.
This temporary transition ensures continuity at the highest levels of Ghana's judiciary, with Justice Pwamang taking up the role in the interim. As the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Pwamang's appointment is in line with Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which provides that the longest-serving Justice of the Supreme Court shall act in the absence or inability of the Chief Justice to perform her duties.
