Helicopter Crash: Ato Forson and Kofi Buah Take on New Roles Amidst National Mourning

Accra, Ghana – 7 August, 2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has announced temporal ministerial appointments following the deaths of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson ,Minister for Finance, has been appointed as Acting Minister for Defence whilst Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah ,Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has been tasked to act as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.

According to a statement from The Presidency , these appointments aim to ensure continuity and stability in key sectors of national governance as the country mourns the loss of two distinguished public servants. The interim ministers will assume their additional responsibilities immediately, while maintaining their current portfolios.

Meanwhile ,the Ghana Armed Forces and relevant state agencies have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the crash. Flags are currently flying at half-mast nationwide, and a three-day national mourning period has been declared.
