MultiChoice Ghana Faces Shutdown Over DStv Price Dispute
Accra ,Ghana – September 6,2025 - Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a stern warning to MultiChoice Ghana, the operator of DStv, stating that the company's operations will be shut down today, Saturday, September 6, 2025, if it fails to engage in negotiations over a price reduction.
The ongoing dispute highlights the growing discontent among Ghanaians with MultiChoice's pricing model, which is perceived as exorbitant compared to other markets. The Minister's firm stance has resonated with consumers who feel exploited by the company's dominant market position and lack of responsiveness to their concerns. If implemented, the shutdown would be enforced by the National Communications Authority (NCA), the regulatory body responsible for overseeing broadcasting services in Ghana.
Such a move would have far-reaching consequences, impacting millions of subscribers and triggering significant legal and economic fallout.
In a Facebook post ,the Communications Minister wrote ,”Let me be clear, I have no intention to continue tolerating the disrespect to Ghanaians by DStv. If MultiChoice is not interested as they claim in their last statement, in discussing a reduction in prices as they had indicated to me, we would proceed to effect the shutdown tomorrow (September 6,2025) as indicated.
DStv indicated their willingness to engage the Ministry on its concerns on pricing and prayed us to stay our enforcement action. If they have changed their position, then we simply would enforce the regulatory action. No company is above the law. When MultiChoice is ready to discuss price reduction, they can come to the negotiation table. Until then, there is nothing for us to meet over. The National Communications Authority Ghana would carry out enforcement. Ghana is open for businesses that respect our laws and institutions”.
Meanwhile ,MultiChoice has denied agreeing to a price reduction, contrary to the Minister's announcement that a deal has been reached. In a statement, the company said it continues to engage with the Minister in a bid to find an amicable solution that is beneficial for all parties involved but does not jeopardize the viability of the DStv service.
