Govt Pays Off Outstanding Salaries to Current, Former Black Stars Coaches

Accra, Ghana - 30 May, 2025 - The Ghanaian government, under the leadership of Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has finally settled all outstanding salary arrears owed to current and former coaches of the Black Stars, the country's senior national football team.
This significant move is a fulfillment of a key commitment made by the government of President John Dramani Mahama to restore accountability and fairness in Ghana's football ecosystem.
The coaches, who were engaged by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over various periods, had been owed compensation by the government for their services, which included participation in major international matches and tournaments.
The payment, which follows a thorough auditing and inter-agency coordination process, brings relief to the affected coaches, who had served the country with dedication and professionalism despite not being paid their due compensation for extended periods.
The list of coaches whose arrears have been cleared includes former head coaches Chris Hughton and C.K. Akonnor, as well as current head coach Otto Addo and his technical team. Minister Adams emphasized that this move is not just about settling debts but also about restoring dignity and building a professional culture in Ghanaian sports.
The minister also revealed that the Ministry is working on plans to establish a National Sports Fund to prevent similar issues in the future. This development signals a renewed commitment by the government to treat national team professionals with the respect and dignity they deserve.
The payment is expected to boost the morale of sports professionals in the country and promote a more sustainable and professional approach to sports management.
