Ghana's Washington Embassy: Over 800 Visas were Issued on First Day of Reopening - Ablakwa

Accra, Ghana - 30 May, 2025 - Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has commended the country's diplomatic team in Washington D.C. for their exceptional performance after the embassy processed over 800 visa applications on its first day of resumption.
The embassy had recently reopened under a renewed operational strategy, part of a broader institutional reform agenda aimed at repositioning Ghana's foreign missions.
Ablakwa, in a social media post, praised the team for their efficiency, professionalism, and integrity, attributing their success to the right ecosystem and leadership.
According to Ablakwa, the reforms underway are crucial in restoring Ghana's international reputation. He dismissed claims that the reforms led to politically motivated job replacements, stating that the country has a pool of distinguished diplomats to lead the reforms.
“Contrary to false and baseless claims, there have been no new recruitments to replace lost jobs in our Washington embassy. We have an adequate stock of distinguished and astute diplomats to lead ongoing reforms,” he stressed.
The minister also announced the nullification of an unauthorized agreement made in 2023 involving a top official at the Washington Embassy and an individual named Fred Kwarteng. Details of this agreement, along with other remedial actions, will be presented to Parliament soon.
