Government Warns Cement Dealers Over High Prices
Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza

Accra, Ghana – 24 July, 2025 – The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has cautioned cement producers and dealers against maintaining high prices, warning that the government will prioritize cheaper sources for its upcoming large-scale road infrastructure projects. Speaking to news reporter ahead of the budget review presentation, Agbodza emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring fair pricing for construction materials, particularly cement.

The Minister expressed concern over the high cost of cement, noting that it directly affects the cost of public infrastructure and ultimately, taxpayers. He urged cement dealers to reduce prices in line with economic improvements, such as the appreciation of the cedi. "Cement producers who are refusing to pass on the gains made in the economy... will not be favoured," he warned.

Agbodza suggested that a fair price for cement should be around GH¢95 per bag, rather than the current GH¢120 in some markets. "From the calculation that I've seen, I will not be surprised or it should not be out of place for cement to be sold at GH¢95," he said.

He clarified that the government is not introducing price controls but is demanding fair pricing emphasizing that other businesses, such as trotro drivers and fuel traders, have reduced prices in response to economic improvements, and cement dealers should do the same.

The Minister dismissed claims from cement producers that imported clinker drives up costs, pointing out that the stronger cedi has lowered import costs. "They said when the dollar was up, that's why prices rose. Now the dollar is down. What's the excuse now?" he questioned.
