GNFS Introduces New Measures to Enhance Market Safety

Accra, Ghana - 14 Jan, 2025 - In response to recent fire outbreaks in markets across Ghana, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has unveiled new directives aimed at bolstering fire safety and protection in these areas.

The move comes after a series of devastating fires resulted in significant losses and raised concerns about preventive measures.

As part of the new measures, the GNFS  noted in a press release that personnel and fire appliances will be stationed at markets nationwide from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am daily. This will provide round-the-clock fire coverage and enable swift responses to potential incidents. A dedicated task force will also patrol the markets daily to ensure prompt action in the event of a fire outbreak.

Additionally, the GNFS plans to establish fire units or posts in key markets across the country. These units will focus on intensifying fire safety education, conducting regular inspections, and enforcing compliance with fire safety protocols. The GNFS will work closely with market authorities, the Ghana Police Service, and National Security to ensure effective surveillance, protection, and quick response to any fire-related incidents.

“The Chief Fire Officer, Julius A. Kuunuor, has instructed that: Personnel and fire appliances be deployed at various markets across the country from 1800 hours to 0600 hours daily to provide round-the-clock fire cover,'' portions of the press release read.
