GIS Repatriates 819 Undocumented Nigeriens, 106 Nigerians in Major Operation

Accra, Ghana - 21 May, 2025 - In a significant move to address the growing concern of undocumented migration, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has repatriated nearly a thousand individuals who were found to be residing in the country without proper documentation.
According to the GIS, S total of 925 migrants, predominantly from Niger and Nigeria, were returned to their home countries following a large-scale operation conducted in Accra on May 16, 2025.
The operation, which targeted individuals engaged in street begging and other illicit activities, resulted in the arrest of over 2,200 undocumented migrants.
The GIS, in a statement revealed that the repatriation process, which commenced on May 17, 2025, saw 819 Nigeriens and 106 Nigerians safely returned to their countries by May 19.
The migrants, who were held at designated centers, underwent thorough profiling and security screening, and were provided with essential services, including meals and medical care.
The GIS emphasized its commitment to upholding international best practices, ensuring the migrants were treated with dignity and respect.
The breakdown of the migrants' nationalities reveals a significant presence of West African nationals, with Nigeriens making up the largest group. The GIS has assured that efforts are ongoing to repatriate the remaining individuals, further underscoring Ghana's commitment to managing migration effectively.
