Ghana's Tehran Embassy Reopens September 16 After Security Concerns
Accra ,September 3,2025 - Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced the reopening of the country's embassy in Tehran, Iran, after a three-month closure due to heightened tensions in the Middle East. The embassy will resume operations on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
The Ghanaian embassy in Tehran was temporarily closed on June 16, 2025, as a precautionary measure to protect staff and Ghanaian nationals amid escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel. The closure was a response to the deteriorating security situation in the region, which saw exchanges of missile strikes, damage to property, and civilian casualties.
The decision to reopen the embassy follows an improvement in the security environment in Tehran. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press statement ,assured that it will continue to closely monitor developments in the region and take swift action if necessary. The statement emphasized that the welfare of diplomatic staff and members of the Ghanaian community in Iran remains a top priority.
Ghana and Iran have enjoyed cordial relations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1974. Despite closing its embassy in 1981 due to economic reasons, Ghana reopened its mission in 2008, strengthening bilateral cooperation. The two countries have established a Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation, which serves as a platform for discussing areas of mutual benefit. High-level visits between Ghana and Iran have also contributed to the growth of their relationship.
