Ghana's Supreme Court sets December 18 to rule on anti-LGBTQI+ bill
Accra, Ghana - Nov 19, 2024 - Ghana's Supreme Court has set December 18, 2024, as the judgment day for Richard Dela Sky's constitutional challenge against the Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill.
This case has been ongoing since May 2024, with proponents of the bill accusing the Chief Justice of stalling the process.
However, the Judicial Service stepped in to clarify that the delay was actually due to the parties' failure to submit required documents.
Richard Dela Sky, a media personality and lawyer, filed the suit to challenge the constitutionality of "The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill," arguing that it contravenes several articles of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
The bill, passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, has sparked controversy, with President Akufo-Addo assuring the diplomatic community that Ghana's human rights record remains intact despite the bill's passage.
The Supreme Court has granted the Speaker of Parliament and the Attorney General leave to file their defenses, and at a recent hearing, allowed Dela Sky to amend parts of his statement of case, giving the defendants a chance to respond.
