Beijing, China – October 13,2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has expressed unwavering confidence that Ghana will soon shatter the glass ceiling and elect its first female president. Addressing leaders at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Beijing, China, Mahama emphasized Ghana's progress toward gender equality, citing recent milestones that underscore the country's commitment to empowering women.

Ghana's election of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman as the country's first female Vice President in 2024 marks a significant breakthrough in the nation's pursuit of gender parity. Women are increasingly taking up leadership positions in key national institutions, including the judiciary and security services. Initiatives such as establishing a Women's Development Bank to provide low-interest loans and financial support to women entrepreneurs demonstrate Ghana's commitment to promoting gender equality.

Mahama highlighted his government's efforts to empower women and girls, including strengthening the Domestic Violence Unit of the Ghana Police Service and implementing the Affirmative Action Bill, targeting 50-50 gender parity in leadership roles by 2030. "These are not symbolic gestures; they are a deliberate affirmation that women deserve a seat at the highest levels of decision-making," Mahama stressed. "And I am confident that, in the very near future, our women will break the glass ceiling and that a woman will be president of the Republic of Ghana."

During his visit, President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and sign memoranda of understanding to strengthen Ghana-China relations. The engagements aim to deepen the long-standing partnership between Ghana and China and promote greater cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
