Ghana's Media Landscape Shaken as NCA Suspends Radio Stations
Tamale, Ghana – 12 August, 2025 -The National Communications Authority (NCA) has taken decisive action against several radio stations across Ghana for failing to comply with regulatory requirements. This move comes after a nationwide forensic audit revealed widespread non-compliance among FM stations.
Affected Stations
The suspended stations include :
- Donplus Multimedia Limited: 105.9 FM, Ho
- Dreams Ghana Media Limited: 104.9 FM, New Abirem
- Jam Multimedia Limited: 101.3 FM, Kintampo
- Jewel Group Limited: 102.7 FM, Duayaw Nkwanta
- Kpandai Star Community Radio: 107.3 FM, Kpandai
- Unique Gateway Communication Limited: 105.7 FM, Nkawkaw
- Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited:
- Accra: 95.9 FM
- Kumasi: 101.3 FM
- Takoradi: 101.3 FM
Reasons for Suspension
The suspensions were due to various infractions, including:
- Operating without valid authorization: 28 stations were found to be operating with expired authorizations.
- Failure to set up operations within two years: 14 stations received authorization but failed to establish operations within the required timeframe.
- Non-payment of provisional authorization fees: 13 stations applied for authorization and were issued provisional authorization but failed to pay the required fees.
- Failure to meet regulatory requirements: 7 stations paid provisional fees but have not been issued final authorizations due to unmet requirements.
Background
The NCA's action follows a directive from the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, to enforce strict compliance with licensing and operational conditions within the broadcasting sector. Despite a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama, many stations failed to rectify their infractions.
