Ghanaian Students Abroad to Stage Demo Over Unpaid Stipends

A group of Ghanaian students studying abroad, who are beneficiaries of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, have announced plans to stage a demonstration on June 4, 2025.

The students are protesting the government's failure to pay their stipends and allowances for over a year.

According to a joint statement issued by the Coalition of Ghanaian Scholars Abroad, the students have not received their monthly stipends for 14 months, while book and health allowances have been unpaid for two academic years. Despite repeated appeals and diplomatic efforts, the students claim that the government has abandoned its obligation to support their studies.

The Coalition which comprises of students from Cuba, UK, Morocco, Hungary, Algeria and Russia insists that the demonstration is a peaceful assembly aimed at drawing attention to their plight and demanding accountability from the Ghanaian authorities. The students describe their situation as a "desperate cry for survival," with many struggling to pay rent, buy food, or access healthcare.

“This protest is not a political move. It is a desperate cry for survival. Many of us are stranded, unable to pay rent, buy food, or access healthcare. We feel forgotten by the country we are representing,” the statement read.

The protest highlights the challenges faced by Ghanaian students studying abroad, who are relying on government support to pursue their education. The students are calling on the government to take immediate action to address their concerns and provide the necessary support to enable them to continue their studies.
