Ghana to Transform Fuel Stations into EV Charging Centers

Accra, Ghana - 20 March, 2025 - Ghana's Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to transform traditional fuel stations into electric vehicle (EV) charging centers.
This bold move is part of the government's broader strategy to propel Ghana towards a clean energy future, reducing the country's reliance on fossil fuels.
Speaking at an energy policy forum on Wednesday, March 19, Jinapor emphasized the need for Ghana to prepare for the impending shift towards electric vehicles. He predicted that Ghanaian roads will soon witness an influx of electric cars, with a significant transformation expected within the next decade.
The minister highlighted the rapid advancements in EV technology, noting that charging times have improved substantially over the years. To accelerate this transition, the government plans to convert existing fuel stations into EV charging centers, leveraging cutting-edge technology to enable rapid charging.
He also disclosed that in a bid to further enhance Ghana's EV infrastructure, the government is set to collaborate with BYD, a Chinese company, to introduce new technology that can fully charge an electric vehicle in just five minutes.
This development is expected to revolutionize the country's transportation sector, aligning with Ghana's National Energy Transition Plan 2022-2070 and global commitments on climate change.
“What we are going to do is to convert most of our filling stations and take some space and put in place charging stations. And today with technology, in just five minutes to 10 minutes, you can charge your car and continue to move.
“We are also going to deploy BYD, the Chinese company to come up with a new technology. That new technology, in five minutes, your car is fully charged.”
