Ghana to Experience Temporary Nationwide Power Outage on July 13 - Jinapor

Accra, Ghana - 9 July, 2025 Ghana’s Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced a temporary nationwide power outage scheduled for Sunday, 13 July 2025, as Italian energy giant Eni conducts maintenance on its gas supply infrastructure to boost production.

Speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new transmission line project in Anwomaso, near Kumasi, on 8 July, Jinapor assured Ghanaians that the brief disruption, expected to last four to six hours, is a necessary step to enhance the stability of the country’s energy sector, which has faced challenges from fluctuating power supply in recent years.

The planned outage stems from Eni’s decision to temporarily shut off gas valves to rehabilitate its facilities, aiming to increase gas output to 270 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf), a move Jinapor described as critical to stabilizing Ghana’s energy sector.

“This Sunday, July 13, ENI will turn off their valves temporarily to increase gas production to about 270 MMscf. It means that we are stabilising the energy sector,” he stated.

“Because the plant will be turned off for a short period within the day for maintenance works, we are likely to experience some interruption of power. It is for a good purpose,” he stressed.

The minister emphasized that the maintenance, which avoids transitioning thermal plants to liquid fuel due to technical complexities, is based on expert advice to prevent operational risks.

“Based on the advice from engineers, I have directed that we do not attempt to run those plants on liquid fuel for that short period. It involves changing nozzles, it involves a lot of work, and so if we are going off for about four to six hours, you don’t risk transitioning to liquid fuel only to come back to gas,” Jinapor explained.

Eni, operating in Ghana since 2009, is a key player in the country’s energy landscape, managing the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) project, which supplies 65% of Ghana’s energy demand through gas sales to the domestic market, according to the company’s website. The firm, which produces around 80,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, recently submitted a Declaration of Commerciality for its Eban-Akoma discoveries, signaling further investment in Ghana’s upstream sector.
Jinapor also highlighted a new oil discovery by Eni and renewed commitment from Tullow Oil to expand upstream petroleum activities, reflecting optimism about Ghana’s oil and gas potential.
