Pope Leo XIV has extended his deepest sympathies to Ghanaians after a devastating helicopter crash claimed eight lives, including two ministers and senior government officials, on August 6, 2025.

In a heartfelt telegram signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State, the Pope expressed his sorrow and assured the nation of his spiritual closeness during this challenging period. The Holy Father prayed for the deceased and their families, entrusting the souls of the victims to the mercy of Almighty God.

The telegram, addressed to Bishop Matthew K. Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, read: “His Holiness Pope Leo XIV sends his condolences upon the deaths of the ministers, government officials, and all who perished in the military helicopter crash. Entrusting the souls of the deceased to the mercy of Almighty God, and with prayers for those who mourn their loss, especially their families, the Holy Father assures the nation of his spiritual closeness at this difficult time.”

The helicopter crash occurred in a heavily forested area of the Ashanti Region, resulting in the loss of eight lives. The victims included Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who were traveling to Obuasi for an assignment related to combating illegal mining.
