Get Ready for Scrutiny ,Minority Warns Acting CJ
Accra ,October 22,2025 - The Minority in Parliament is gearing up for a fierce battle ahead of the vetting of Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, warning him to be adequately prepared to face tough questions from lawmakers.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, referred President John Dramani Mahama's nomination of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice to the Appointments Committee for consideration, setting the stage for a rigorous scrutiny of the nominee's credentials and past actions.
Speaking on the floor, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed concern over alleged constitutional lapses surrounding the nomination and assumption of office by the Acting Chief Justice, emphasizing that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie must come prepared to earn the approval of Parliament.
"The one who has been nominated for the Chief Justice position must come prepared to earn the approval of the House. If you come unprepared — you do not have your judgments, and we have questions about your involvement in your boss's 'sacking' or concerns about how you have conducted yourself — you are required to answer. So, you have to prepare," Mr. Afenyo-Markin cautioned.
The Minority Leader's warning suggests that lawmakers will be scrutinizing Justice Baffoe-Bonnie's past decisions, his role in the removal of his predecessor, and his overall conduct as a judge. The vetting process is expected to be intense, with the Minority seeking to hold the nominee accountable for any perceived shortcomings.
The outcome of the vetting exercise is uncertain, but one thing is clear: the Minority is determined to ensure that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is thoroughly scrutinized before being confirmed as the next Chief Justice of Ghana.
