Fuel Tanker Hijacking Foiled by Accra Regional Police
Accra, Ghana – 12 August, 2025 –
However, swift police action led to the recovery of the stolen tanker, along with another tanker and a pumping machine, and the arrest of the suspects.
According to a statement ,the police intercepted the pickup truck the next day, rescuing the victims and capturing one suspect after a chase. The suspects, who are in police custody, will face arraignment soon.
A police statement issued on August 11, 2025, said the suspects, traveling in a green pickup truck, intercepted the tanker with registration number GT 2493-20 and forcibly took control of it. The driver and his mate were handcuffed and placed in the pickup, while two suspects drove the tanker away.
Thanks to swift police action, the stolen tanker was recovered the following day at a fuel station in Asikawa Junction near Bunso. Police intercepted the pickup truck in the Accra Region and rescued the victims, arresting one suspect, Christian Bortey Bernard, after a chase.
The police arrested six additional suspects ,Mark Ahito, 34,Shaibu Adams, 27,Awini Ibrahim, 25,Muniru Ayeba, 19,Barnabas Atiga, 26 and Abdullah Ganiu, 32.
The police also recovered two fuel tankers ,a pumping machine used for fuel transfer and a Golf car with registration number GW 5185-Z.
The suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations. The Accra Regional Police Command has urged drivers and transport operators to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or vehicles to the nearest police station. The police will continue to pursue and prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law.
