Fuel Filling Station Construction Halted as Minister Cracks Down on Illegal Lagoon Filling
Kpone,Ghana,August 24,2025 - The Greater Accra Regional Minister,Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has ordered the immediate remediation of a natural lagoon in Kpone-Katamanso that was being illegally filled with soil and other materials purportedly to make way for the construction of a fuel filling station.
The lagoon, which is a vital part of the community's ecosystem, was being filled with large quantities of soil and construction materials, altering its natural water flow and obstructing its ecological functions. This unlawful environmental modification posed serious risks, including disruption of natural drainage channels, potential flooding hazards, and long-term degradation of the aquatic ecosystem.
Upon receiving reports and video submissions from constituents and residents, the regional minister led a high-level delegation to the site to conduct an on-site assessment. The delegation included the Municipal Chief Executives of Ningo-Prampram and Kpone-Katamanso, the Member of Parliament for Kpone-Katamanso, and other key stakeholders.
Following the site visit, the Minister directed that all filling materials deposited into the lagoon must be completely removed and the lagoon restored to its original state within one week.
Emphasizing the remediation exercise will be jointly supervised by the Municipal Chief Executives and the Greater Accra Regional NADMO Director to ensure full compliance.
She noted in a report that non-compliance will attract strict enforcement actions, including legal sanctions and administrative penalties.The Regional Minister emphasized that the preservation of natural ecosystems within the Greater Accra Region is a collective responsibility that cannot be compromised.
“The lagoon at Kpone-Katamanso must be fully restored and protected for the benefit of current residents and future generations” she noted.
