Mahama's gov't approved more mining licenses - Minerals Commission boss
Accra, Ghana - Martin Ayisi, CEO of the Minerals Commission, has sparked renewed debate on Ghana's mining sector management after disclosing that more small-scale mining licenses were issued during former President John Dramani Mahama's tenure than under President Akufo-Addo.
Ayisi presented a document to Parliament's Government Assurances Committee, chaired by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, highlighting the increased licenses granted during Mahama's era as a contributing factor to the current mining industry challenges.
The Minerals Commission faces criticism for the surge in illegal mining activities, known as "galamsey," which severely impacts the environment and local communities.
Ayisi emphasized the need for responsible mining practices and better oversight to prevent environmental degradation and social issues.
Small-scale mining significantly contributes to Ghana's economy, but Ayisi stressed the importance of balancing economic benefits with environmental protection.
