President Mahama Redirects Drought Relief Food to Hungry FSHS Students

Accra, Ghana - 13 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the redistribution of food initially meant for drought victims to senior high schools nationwide, in a bid to address the worsening food shortages in these institutions.

The President's directive, announced during the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra, aims to ensure students receive proper meals amidst the ongoing shortages.

According to President Mahama, the food, currently stored in warehouses in Tema, was imported by the previous government to support areas affected by last year's drought. However, given the current emergency, the President has instructed the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to allocate and distribute the food to senior high schools.

“I have asked the Chief of Staff to work with the GES to allocate and evacuate food that is currently in warehouses in Tema,'' he stated.

“This food was imported by the outgone government in response to the drought that occurred last year but in this emergency, we need to use some of that food to feed our students,” he added.
The decision is made against a backdrop of increasing worries about the long-term viability of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) initiative, particularly in regards to providing meals for its students.

The FSHS program, a flagship initiative of the government, aims to provide free secondary education to all Ghanaian students.
