Former Hajj Board Spokesperson Alhaji Gomda Rejects $5m Debt Allegations
Accra, Ghana - 06 Feb, 2025 - Alhaji Abdul Rahman Gomda, former spokesperson for Ghana's Hajj Board, has rejected claims that the board accumulated over $5 million in debt.
In an interview with Channel One Newsroom, Mr Gomda clarified that the actual debt stood at $4,759,250, significantly lower than the alleged amount.
He explained that the former Hajj Board had inherited a debt of $7.87 million and had worked to reduce it.
Mr Gomda also took issue with the term "discovery", used by the interim Hajj committee to describe the alleged debt. He argued that this implied wrongdoing, whereas the board had been transparent about its financial challenges.
“That is not the case. The amount regarding the indebtedness is less than $5 million. It is $4,759,250. We inherited a debt—I repeat, we inherited a debt of $7.87 million when we took over,” Gomda stated.
He emphasised that the former Hajj Board worked diligently to tackle the inherited debt.
Gomda also addressed the implications of the term “discovery,” which he argued suggests a hidden criminality.
“I wish to add also that the word ‘discovery’ presupposes a certain criminality hidden from the taskforce. No. The handing over notes were presented which included these challenges,” he explained.
